GEAR DISINFECTION RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Deuter USA has collected the following tips and guidance on cleaning and disinfecting Deuter products in response to requests for assistance with gear disinfection to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

    Non-Personal Protective Equipment:
  • Non-PPE products such as packs, chalk bags, luggage, etc. may be disinfected using slightly more aggressive methods than PPE products. Deuter USA recommends the following strategies for disinfecting non-PPE gear
  • Warm Water and Non-detergent Soap
All PPE and non-PPE gear can be washed with warm water (below 158°F/70°C) and non-detergent soap. Non-detergent soap is an extremely effective disinfectant and has no observed adverse effects on the strength or performance of PPE products. Gear should then be thoroughly rinsed and dried away from direct sunlight before use.
    • Non-detergent soaps include most “gentle” soaps, laundry soaps for delicate clothing, most dish soaps, and all soaps made from natural ingredients.
    • o Note: UV light from drying in direct sunlight can degrade fabric.
  • Quarantine
Research shows that COVID 19 has a limited lifespan on surfaces. If possible, gear may be quarantined for a period of 5 days as a disinfection strategy.

BACKPACK MAINTENANCE

  • How often should I wash my backpack?
This really depends on how dirty you get while using it! After every tour, Deuter recommends emptying your backpack completely and brushing soiled areas with soapy water. Make sure all zippers are kept clean.
  • What is the best way to clean my backpack?
Place the backpack in a tub or shower filled with water and wash with pH-neutral soap. Dirt and stains can be easily cleaned with a soft brush. Salt stains on the carrying system can be removed by simply washing with soap and plenty of water. Allow to fully dry before storing in a well-ventilated place. Do not iron. Do not wash in the washing machine.
  • What’s the best way to keep my backpack waterproof?
For the first few years, the backpack material offers great water protection. However, as the material ages, water resistance will decrease. In heavy rain water may seep through the zippers and seams. For longer journeys we recommend using a rain cover or to keep your gear 100 percent dry, waterproof bags in the backpack should be used.

HYDRATION SYSTEMS

How do I clean my Streamer?
  • Open the Streamer.
  • Remove the tube from the bladder.
  • Take the bite-valve off the mouthpiece.
  • Turn the valve socket a quarter turn to the middle label.
  • Remove and take apart (do not remove the 90° angle piece) from the tube.
  • Rinse and clean it with warm water and mild detergent – never use boiling water.
  • Do not use abrasive scrubbers to clean.
  • Rinse again thoroughly with clear water.
  • Dry with paper towels and hang it upside down.
  • When fully dried, put the pieces back together.
  • Be sure to keep the filled Streamer from direct sun exposure.

Note: Thoroughly clean your Streamer after use with soft drinks. Use cleaning tablets if your hydration system is extremely dirty. If necessary put the empty hydration system in the freezer and clean thoroughly after defrosting – an easy, effective way of killing bacteria. Make sure you store your open and clean Streamer in a clean and dry place.
